Authoring sustainability workbook earns acceptance to Clinton Global Initiative University 2018

Clinton Global Initiative University

Lori Delacruz Lewis, Mountain View College’s Sustainability Coordinator, has been selected to attend the 11thAnnual Clinton Global Initiative University meeting in Chicago this October.

As a graduate student at SMU, Lewis submitted her capstone project, a workbook she published last fall that is designed to help faculty identify sustainability issues that already exist in their courses. Her workbook serves as a tool for bridging disciplinary silos by illustrating connections between and among disciplines for every topic. “It’s different from other resources I found in my research, as it provides supplemental current events, videos and reports for topics while illustrating connections with other courses and alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals,” says Lewis.

“Your application demonstrated a clear passion for change and a Commitment to Action that is new, specific and measurable. We are thrilled to welcome you and 1,000 of your peers to this exciting event hosted by President Bill Clinton and Chelsea Clinton,” the acceptance letter noted.

“Having the opportunity to participate in CGI U and share my work on the global stage is thrilling,” she says. Since the workbook is published through Creative Commons, Lewis hopes it will be shared and utilized in classrooms around the world.

Building on the successful model of the Clinton Global Initiative, President Clinton launched the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) in 2007 to engage the next generation of leaders on college campuses around the world.

Each year, CGI U hosts a meeting where students, university representatives, topic experts, and celebrities come together to discuss and develop innovative solutions to pressing global challenges. Students create their own Commitments to Action that address issues on campus, in local communities, or around the world. Since 2008, students have made more than 6,250 commitments, and nearly $3 million in funding has been awarded to these commitment-makers through CGI U.

Welcome to the Age of Climate Migration

ninth ward Hurricane Harvey, which hit Texas and Louisiana last August, causing $125 billion in damage, dumped more water out of the sky than any storm in U.S. history. By one calculation, roughly a million gallons fell for every person in Texas. The water rained down on a flat former bayou that had become a concrete and asphalt empire of more than 2.3 million people. Highways turned into rivers and shopping malls into lakes. As the water rose, people scrambled for safe refuge – into attics, onto rooftops and overpasses. Read more >>
